A numismatist is a scientist who specializes in the study of coins, or numismatics.
Apart from its scientific purpose, numismatics is an invaluable aid to numismatic collectors. Coin collecting has been practised since antiquity3. For most collectors, historical interest in the strict sense is secondary.
The numismatist studies several characteristics of a coin:
- Its history
- Obverse and Reverse
- La Tranche
- His course
- Condition (Quality)
- Its diameter
- The weight
- Purity (Title)
- Year of manufacture (Année de Frappe)
- The number of parts
- Marketability
