Established at 26 Place Vendôme since 1893, the house, founded in 1858, has built its identity on the use of relief: gadroons, rice grains, Paris studs, grosgrain. These are goldsmith-like textures, borrowed from architecture and passementerie, and they constitute the best starting point for identifying a piece.

The Four Ring

Four adjoining rings, designed in 2004, each feature a different texture: grosgrain, gadroon, Clou de Paris, and a double gadrooned line. The metals also alternate, combining yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, and sometimes a band of black or white lacquer. The four bands must form a perfectly continuous cylinder, without any steps between them, and each texture must remain crisp from one end to the other. The variations are indicated by the width: Classic, Radiant, White, and Grosgrain only.

Bohemian Snake

A teardrop motif, encircled by a row of gadroons, has been featured since 1968 in pendants, earrings, rings, and bracelets, and is available in four sizes, from the smallest to the largest. The teardrop can be made of smooth gold, set with pavé, or filled with a stone: malachite, lapis lazuli, or mother-of-pearl. The regularity of the gadroons around the edge is the defining characteristic: they must be identical in width and height around the entire circumference.

Reflection

This wristwatch, created in 1947, is recognizable by its rectangular case with gadroons and its tool-free interchangeable and adjustable strap system. It is as much a work of art as a horological masterpiece: the 18-karat gold case represents a considerable mass of metal, and the straps are available in gold, leather, and fabric. Check for the presence of the original attachment system, which is unique to this model.

Peacock Feather and the Animal Repertoire

The peacock feather, designed by the founder in the 19th century, reappears regularly in aigrettes, brooches, and pendants, often articulated to shimmer with movement. The house has also produced a menagerie of animals—owls, snakes, cats—in sculpted pieces. These creations fall under the category of fine jewelry and are judged on the delicacy of the modeling, the functionality of the joints, and the quality of the stones that adorn them.

Signature, number and hallmark

The signature appears on the inner edge of a ring, on the clasp of a necklace, or on the reverse of a motif. It is followed by the metal's fineness in thousandths and a unique number for the piece. Like all pieces made or sold in France, it bears the maker's mark in a lozenge and the hallmark: an eagle's head for 18-karat gold, or the head of Minerva accompanied by 925/1000 for silver. On a four-band ring, look for the engraving on the widest band, on the inside: this is the only place where the thickness allows it. On a watch, the number is read on the back of the case.

A certificate or invoice bearing the engraved number links it to a reference and a production date. On contemporary pieces, this primarily saves time: the construction and engraving process is usually sufficient to establish the item's authenticity. On antique pieces, however, an original document can establish provenance, which alters the interpretation of the object.

After-sales service records are worth keeping. A lacquer replacement, resizing, or a joint repair on an animal part are normal interventions; when documented, they can be understood at a glance, otherwise they require establishing what is original.

Finally, the invoice has tax implications that should not be overlooked: it allows you to opt for the actual capital gains tax regime instead of the flat-rate tax on precious metals, which applies by default. Keep it even if you don't intend to sell.

Relief is both the signature of this house and its best safeguard: it is very difficult to reproduce correctly in series.

On a four-band ring, we first examine the junction between the bands. On an original piece, the four bands form a continuous cylinder, without any perceptible step. Copies exhibit steps, gaps between the bands, or one band slightly higher than its neighbor. We then examine each texture: the clou de Paris (a flat, rounded edge) should be a pyramid with four equal sides, repeated without any irregularity in spacing; the grosgrain should retain its grain even in the most curved areas. Imitations almost always fall apart in these areas, where the original tooling is at work and the imprecise casting is flawed.

On gadrooned drops, the fraud often lies in the stone: genuine malachite displays unique concentric bands, while an imitation resin repeats them identically from one motif to the next. Checking the metal's purity completes the diagnosis: we encounter copies in gilded silver and brass, which measurement reveals in a few seconds.
