History of the Gold Krugerrand

The name of this gold coin comes from combining the name of the first President of the Republic of South Africa, Paul Kruger, and the name of the South African currency, the rand, which is itself an abbreviation of Witwatersrand, the range of hills where most of South Africa's gold deposits were discovered. The coin's design has remained unchanged since its first minting. The Krugerrand is also called the "1-ounce Krugerrand" or simply " Krugerrand Springbok ».

When the Krugerrand was launched in 1967 by the South African Mint CompanyIt was the first coin to contain precisely one ounce of gold. This characteristic quickly earned it enormous international success, proving far easier to handle and trade than gold bars. This success was all the more remarkable as the Krugerrand faced no competition for several years: it was, in fact, the only one-ounce gold coin available on international markets until 1979. Then, other countries decided to mint their own one-ounce gold coins, motivated by such enthusiasm.

With the end of apartheid, the Krugerrand gradually regained its former prominence and is now the world's best-selling gold coin. It should be noted that using it as circulating currency could prove problematic, as it has no face value. Therefore, the Krugerrand's value depends on the price of gold and is equal to the price of one ounce of gold.

  • Obverse: The obverse features the image of Paul Kruger, as portrayed by Otto Schultz.
  • Revers: The reverse features a springbok antelope, designed by Coert Steynberg. The weight of the one-ounce gold coin is engraved on the reverse in English: "1 oz". The words "Fine gold" and "Fyngoud" (in Afrikaans), meaning "fine gold", are also present.
  • Slice : Smooth and not grooved, the edge bears the inscription “Independencia Y Libertad” meaning “independence and freedom”.
